July 18 Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State
Park in Mission was the starting point for the annual National Butterfly Count, but one couldn't help but
notice the great birds, too: Greater Roadrunner, Groove-billed Ani,
Green Jay, Orchard Oriole, Hooded Oriole, Altamira Oriole... Butterflies were good too: the
Best Butterfly was seen right out of the chute: DINGY PURPLEWING!
Nice also was the WHITE SCRUB-HAIRSTREAK, CASSIUS BLUE, and White-Striped
Longtail. We also covered the nearby NABA Butterfly Park, where the standout was definitely the GRAY CRACKER but also nice were the Desert Zinnia (Zinnia acerosa), and the
Blackfoot Daisy pointed out by Carol Goolsby, the manager there.

July 19 Santa Ana The Butterfly Count Part II. Distracted by the Clay-Colored
Thrush, Peregrine Falcon, Green Jays, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, but nevertheless we got quite a collection of butterflies including
Silver-Banded Hairstreak. Estero was next on our
visits where the good birds were a dozen Wood Storks overhead and first-of-the-season
Stilt Sandpipers. But also great were the butterflies: FIVE
MEXICAN BLUEWINGS, a Dorantes Longtail, two CYNA BLUES, a CASSIUS BLUE,
but best of all a BROAD-BANDED SWALLOWTAIL.. FRONTERA
AUDUBON was closed, but we managed WHITE SCRUB-HAIRSTREAK.
